Van den Berg Family in South Africa

Berg – Coat of Arms

Please note :

A family crest for a surname is strictly speaking not correct since crests are assigned to an individual and not a family. There are therefore a number of crests in existence that might have belonged to van den Bergs.

In practice, however, people tend to view a crest as belonging to a surname and numerous companies are making money out of selling these to people who use the surname. You can read more about this at http://southafricanresearcher.blogspot.co.za/2012/08/family-coat-of-arms-myth.html

The most common one for van den Berg found on the SA Coats-of-Arms page is below. See www.geocities.org/heartland/valley/8140/lysvz.htm?201712

The symbols in the Berg family crest and arms are numerous, but three common ones are the mountain, lion, and eagle.

The mount (also known as a hillock) is the area at the base of the shield and when so described is almost always green, and somewhere that another charge is placed, to appear more realistic, or give it a specific relationship to other charges around it.

Indeed, unlike like most of the flat, geometric shapes used to divide the field of the shield, the mount may be drawn with tufts of grass and a distinct slope!
